Nova Scotia

Popular belief has it that the castle’s Esplanade is actually Canadian soil. The misconception dates from the 1620s, when James VI supported a scheme to colonise Nova Scotia. Aspiring baronets were saved the daunting journey to their new estate. All they had to do to claim their title was trek to Castle Hill to receive a handful of earth symbolising Nova Scotia soil.
