The laird’s lug

High above the fireplace in the Great Hall you can see a strange looking iron grate. The ‘laird’s lug’ as it is known in Scotland was a peephole for the king and a place where he could eavesdrop on his visitors. Wise to its purpose the Russian KGB asked that it be bricked up prior to Mikhael Gorbachev’s planned visit in 1984.
